Ai Weiwei is not only one of the most important contemporary artists; he is also an untiring activist and critic of authoritarian systems. "Humanity" includes key works from all phases of the artist's career and examines in detail the aspect of humanity and artistic responsibility in the oeuvre of Ai Weiwei.
The catalogue sheds light on concepts such as surveillance, censorship, human rights, freedom of expression, human displacement, radical responsibility, the power of beauty, and the truth of poetry. Guided by these thoughts, it offers new perspectives to understand the relevance of Ai Weiwei's artistic language. It will encompass a wide range of art-historical paradigms (such as the readymade) alongside more radical activist strategies, all aimed at exploring the extremes of the contemporary human condition on a global scale.

À l'occasion du cinquantenaire de sa naissance, la Fondation Beyeler consacre une vaste rétrospective à Jean-Michel Basquiat (9/05 - 5/09/2010) à travers près d'une centaine de toiles, travaux sur papier et objets provenant de musées et de collections particulières du monde entier. Ses oeuvres peuplées de personnages semblant tout droit sortis de bandes dessinées, de silhouettes squelettiques, d'objets quotidiens bizarres et de slogans poétiques, frappent par leur force et par la somptuosité de leurs couleurs.
Dans l'oeuvre de Basquiat, l'autoportrait occupe une place centrale et représente l'un des caractères fondamentaux de sa pratique. Ce livre propose plus de cinquante autoportraits de l'artiste en plus de la série de portraits d'hommes afro-américaines, permettant ainsi d'analyser le travail de Basquiat du point de vue de l'identité et de l'introspection, mais aussi du racisme et des préjugés sociétaux.
Avec une centaine d'oeuvres, la galerie Hauser & Wirth de Zürich compare les travaux de Schwitters, Miro et Arp (11/06/2016-18/09/2016). Ce catalogue présente l'engagement des trois artistes envers les formes géométriques plutôt qu'organiques et leur volonté commune " d'assassiner la peinture" en se tournant vers le collage et l'assemblage, plus à même selon eux d'accomplir la révolution du Cubisme.

Edvard Munch (1863-1944) est connu exclusivement pour une seule oeuvre : le Cri. Travail certes emblématique, mais si peu représentatif de l'ensemble de son oeuvre. La notoriété exagérée de ce tableau a eu pour conséquence d'occulter la réelle dimension et le vrai message de l'artiste.
Il est étonnant de constater si tôt dans l'histoire de l'art un artiste se détacher de toutes les conventions auxquelles nous avaient habitué les artistes et les mouvements précédents. Il est prodigieux de remarquer dès les années 1880 Munch s'attaquer aux couches de couleur, de le voir véritablement labourer la surface picturale ou encore laisser son oeuvre sous la pluie et la neige, transférer des photographies et des films muets à l'intérieur de ses toiles et de ses oeuvres graphiques. Surprenant encore la transgression avec laquelle il supprime les frontières entre les supports et les techniques, dans ses gravures, dessins, peintures, sculptures, collages, photographies et films. Il s'inscrit dans la lignée de William Turner et de Gustave Courbet, Il est le chaînon manquant entre les artistes tels que Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Jean Dubuffet et Jackson Pollock dans l'histoire du Modernisme. C'est par ces dépassements sans limite pour l'époque et surtout par son attachement aux qualités matérielles de la peinture et des supports que Munch laisse une oeuvre bouleversante d'une force incomparable.

Jean-Michel Basquiat-artist and art world provocateur-took New York City by storm with his powerful and complex works that relentlessly engaged with charged sociopolitical issues, including race, police brutality, and structural inequity. In this important volume, devoted to an exhibition at the Brant Foundation in their newly opened Manhattan outpost featuring the artist's key works, Basquiat's art returns to its East Village roots, contextualized for the first time in decades in the very neighborhood that served as one of his greatest inspirations.
Dieter Buchhart, noted Basquiat scholar and curator, brings together one hundred of the artist's most important works, focusing on the best examples of the many subjects that informed Basquiat's work, from jazz, anatomy, sports figures, comics, classical literature, the African diaspora, and art history. The exhibition partially restages three of the artist's critical early shows, including an exhibition of the artist's paintings and drawings of heads at Robert Miller Gallery; his most important canvases from Gagosian Gallery's 1982 show in Los Angeles; and Basquiat's solo show at Fun Gallery in the East Village. Buchhart also considers in-depth the artist's so-called stretcher bar paintings, in which the normally hidden wooden supports for stretched canvases are exposed, works that have yet to be explored at length by scholars. In so doing, Buchhart offers a critical assessment of the enduring importance and legacy of the artist's work.

Hermann Nitsch, born in Vienna in 1938, is a co-founder of Viennese Actionism, and one of the international pioneers of the Performance Art Movement. This Austrian universal artist's world-famous painting actions have made a major contribution to the development of art post 1945.
More than 90 of these painting actions have been staged thus far, the most recent were held at the Bayreuth Festival in the summer of 2021 to accompany a new production of the opera The Valkyrie. Nitsch's 20th painting action took place at the Vienna Secession in 1987 and is the only instance in which the artist's action works have remained fully available. This is probably Nitsch's most important integrated work of this kind. It symbolises his extraordinary artistic development and constitutes an unrepeatable contemporary document which exudes an international radiance.
